BRUENING EARNS HONORS FOR INSPIRING STUDENTS AND ATHLETES!!! Mr. Bruening, KMHS CTE teacher, received recognition on behalf of two separate KM Global students for his roles as an educator and a coach. Both submitted powerful personal stories of how he influenced them in positive ways. Megan Petersen's essay ended with "Thank you Mr. Bruening for teaching me vital life skills, creating a safe place in your classes, and helping my future be bright." Maddie Reed shared her experiences on the golf team, and wrapped with "Thank you, Coach Bruening, for being the reason I keep going, for being a great coach, and for making this season the best I could have asked for." Honored is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring and elevating great teachers who make an impact. Each educator who is nominated is celebrated on their Honor Roll: https://www.honored.org/the-honor-roll. The Honored team selects one teacher each month to receive a $5,000 cash award. We also partner with world-class writers to tell the story of the teacher and nominating student.

KM'S FISCAL PLANNING PAGE!!! The Kettle Moraine School District is committed to fiscal responsibility and transparency. Investing in empty seats prevents us from providing the choice and opportunity that defines KM. Our resident student population has declined by nearly 25% in a model that funds schools primarily on a per-pupil basis. While we do not currently have a budget deficit (2024-25 fiscal year), we project growing deficits that will reach $7-8 million by 2031-32. These deficits could be dramatically reduced through right-sizing staffing and facilities to align with declining student populations. This has led us to a planning process that will reduce our district footprint to prioritize small class sizes and student outcomes while being responsible to our taxpayers. It is important to engage our community. We encourage you to learn more and add questions at kmsd.edu/fiscal-planning or attend our final listening session on May 17th from 9-11am at the KMHS Library. Video of our previous listening sessions are also available on the fiscal planning page.

COMMUNITY FISCAL PLANNING LISTENING SESSION TONIGHT AT 6PM!!! We will be conducting listening sessions for the board to hear from community members regarding Scenario IIA for addressing the long-term stability of the district. This is a great opportunity for our community to better understand how closing one elementary school, restructuring our 4K-(4 or 5) district boundaries, and making changes to middle school and high school operations, will impact families. This also provides a forum for our community to inform the decision making process and learn more about each of our elementary schools. For more information on the fiscal planning process, please visit kmsd.edu/fiscal-planning.

KMHS 2025 PROM COURT SELECTED!!! (front row left to right) Brynn Lauters, Samantha LaClair, Julia Pick, Mira Derrig, and Madeline Ascher. KMMS TRACK PRACTICE!!! Delafield Orangetheory Fitness Coach and Kettle Moraine parent, Mel Moose, worked with our Middle School Track program during their practice. They focused on flexibility, strength and the importance of proper form. This is the second time that she has donated her time and skills to help our middle school programming. She also did a conditioning session with the middle school cross country team last fall. The track team athletes were so excited to have her back again and are appreciative of her dedication to health and fitness for all ages! Thank you so much Mel for giving back to the schools and helping our youth!

CELEBRATING SCHOOL NURSES!!! Our school nurses and health room workers provide the kindness, support, and care students need when they are not at their best. Thank you for all that you do!

FIRST ANNUAL KETTLE CUP!!! The Kettle Cup exhibition match will pit the "Lady Lasers" and "Laser Lads" tennis teams against one another. The match will be held May 23rd, starting at 5pm at Three Pillars Tennis Complex at Kettle Moraine High School. We will play a dual, similar to how we would in-season, where the 1st singles play each other, 2nd singles, etc. etc. We will not have a 4th doubles match, but I would love it if all players could come out and support their teams and cheer everyone on! The plan is for the teams to play their matches, with the winners raising the Kettle Cup, a perpetual trophy that will exist year after year, played between the girls team and the boys team. Also, we will have a photographer there (thanks @Michelle Kujawski) to capture all of the wonderful moments. I ask that players wear their official uniforms (girls - please see me at any boys practice to retrieve yours) during the matches in order to really show #KMNation pride. Look for more media and any announcements regarding fundraising to come. I'm asking all of you to please: save the date and spread the word!

NATIONAL HISTORY DAY INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION WINNERS AND FUNDRAISER!!! Three Kettle Moraine students were named state champions at Saturday’s National History Day (NHD) competition held at UW–Madison. They will now advance to the national contest in June, where they will present their research alongside students from across the U.S. and around the world. Recently, the NHD program experienced unexpected financial challenges due to cancelled grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. This means schools must fundraise to participate in the valuable academic competition. You can contribute on Classmunity at https://www.classmunity.com/kmsd/view-fundraiser.php?fundraiser_id=2764. Sixth graders Cecilia H. and Reagan H. earned top honors for their website, Balancing Individual Rights and Shared Responsibilities in a Democratic Society, which explored the history of Social Security. HS^2 junior Emma Manion won first place for her individual performance titled, Ada Deer: Rights and Responsibilities in the Pursuit of Restoration of the Menominee Indian Tribe. Each year, approximately 500,000 students participate in NHD, including 10,000 from Wisconsin. This achievement is a tremendous honor for both the students and the Kettle Moraine School District. The cost for each student to attend the national event—held at the University of Maryland’s College Park campus—is significant. Registration is approximately $165, with lodging and meals totaling around $606. Travel expenses add another $600 per student.

BEST BUDDIES FRIENDSHIP WALK!!! The KM club ended up placing in 7th place for top fundraisers. Our club raised a total of $2,315. We had some top 100 fundraisers too: #10- Iris Fouts raised $675, #35-Macey Christiansen raised $260, and #80- Jack Barker raised $100!

FIRST OF THREE LISTENING SESSIONS ON FISCAL PLANNING!!! We held our first listening session last night for the board to hear from community members regarding Scenario IIA for addressing the long-term stability of the district. Turnout was excellent with individuals speaking from all neighborhoods, and constituencies. The dialog was very open, productive and informative. It was a great opportunity for community members, administrators, and our board to better understand how closing one elementary school, restructuring our 4K-(4 or 5) district boundaries, and making changes to middle school and high school operations, would impact families. The event provided a forum for our community to inform the decision making process and learn more about each of our elementary schools. A recording is available for those who may have missed the event: https://vimeo.com/1080900001?share=copy#t=0. Additional listening sessions will be held May 8th from 6-8pm and May 17th from 9-11am. For more information on the fiscal planning process, please visit kmsd.edu/fiscal-planning. This page features links to our comprehensive comparison matrix for our elementaries, the listening session presentation, an FAQ section, and many other valuable resources for remaining informed and sharing questions.

DECA IN ORLANDO!!! Kettle Moraine DECA had the opportunity to send six students to the DECA International Career Development Conference 2025 who qualified for the conference by being amongst the top few competitors in their event areas at the State Conference in February. The International Conference was hosted in Orlando, Florida this year and took place from April 26 - 29, 2025. Overall, over 25,000 DECA students from all over the world attended the International Conference this year. The Kettle Moraine students who competed at the DECA International Conference were: Alyssa Foote and Madeline Ewald - Business Solutions Project, Elizabeth Lephardt and Savanna Kildow - Marketing Management Team,
Hunter Phillips - Innovation Plan, Malachi Beyerlein - Entrepreneurship Series. With the help of Mr. Dellis, who has been the KM DECA Advisor for the past 26 years, the students completed lots of preparation for their events. Hunter Phillips was recognized as a finalist for her Innovation Plan (ranked in the top 20 out of 190 competitors within her event), and all of the other KM DECA students competed their best at their events. Students also had the opportunity to enjoy the nearby attractions, including Disney World and Universal Orlando, during their free time at the conference. It was a great opportunity for KM DECA students to learn valuable business skills, meet other DECA members from all over the world, be recognized for their achievements, and enjoy the beautiful Florida weather.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND TOURS KM ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS!!! Cast members from the KMHS Campus Spring Production of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland dogged raindrops to visit Cushing, Dousman, and Magee Elementary Schools Thursday May 1. The day before, Wales campus students attended a similar performance at the KM Prism Arts Center. There were lots of smiling faces from the high school performers and younger students in the audience as they experienced the production. The performers answered many questions about how costumes are made, how long it takes to put together a production, and who from the cast attended each school. Come see the full production with complete costumes and set pieces this weekend! Performances are May 2 & 3 @ 7pm, and Sunday May 4 @ 2 pm. Run time is approximately 80 minutes including intermission. Tickets available at the door or in advance at kmdrama.ludus.com.
